Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has settled the Kes 427 million tax dispute with the Kenya Revenue Authority(KRA).

Kidero will now be required to pay Kes 19.4 million shillings under the terms of the agreement.

The Kes 427 million was reduced to Kes 19.4M, including the principal tax of 12,038,982 million, a penalty of 2,407,796, and interest of 5,036.405 million.

Kidero had been ordered to pay tax amounting to 427,269,795.00 million shillings.

The controversy started in 2016 when Kidero received a 680 million shilling tax bill from the KRA that included fines and interest after the KRA reviewed his business and financial records from January 2011 to December 2015.

He contested the taxation at the tax appeals tribunal, arguing that 423 million Shillings of the money were given as campaign contributions.

After the tribunal found in Kidero's favor, the taxman appealed to the Supreme Court, which decided he lacked proof that the money originated from his campaign accounts and permitted the KRA to recover the disputed sum.
