The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has achieved a significant victory in a high-profile drug trafficking case involving controversial businesswoman Joyce Akinyi.
The case, prosecuted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) courts, also implicated her accomplices, Congolese national Paulin Kalala and Peres Ochieng.
Led by prosecutors Norah Achieng, Annette Wangia, and Faith Mwila, the legal team presented strong evidence exposing a sophisticated transnational drug trafficking network orchestrated by the three accused individuals.
In addition to being convicted for drug trafficking, Akinyi was found guilty of possessing a passport without providing a valid explanation, adding to the gravity of her legal troubles.
The landmark case highlights the efforts of law enforcement and the DPP's office in dismantling organized crime and drug trafficking operations in Kenya. One of the co-accused, Peres Ochieng, absconded after being called to defend herself, leading the court to proceed with the case in her absence.
The judgment was delivered, and sentencing has been scheduled for December 10, 2024
