The Sarova Imperial Hotel in Kisumu is among the properties destroyed in Kisumu during Monday’s Azimoo la Umoja demonstrations.
The protests were called by Azimio’s Leader Raila Odinga against the high cost of living and the August 2022 presidential victory he claims was stolen after he lost to President William Ruto.
Anti-riot police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators gathered in various parts of Kisumu city as they attempted to march to the State Lodge which was heavily guarded by police.
Angered by the police action, the demonstrators hurled stones at businesses and other establishments leaving a trail of destruction.
Similar chaotic scenes were witnessed in the capital city of Nairobi where police used teargas and live ammunition to disperse rowdy youths as some, including two MPs and Senators, were arrested.

Further, businesses in Nairobi are counting losses as the town remains deserted due to Azimio’s demos.
On Monday morning, hotels, pharmacies, and banks, among others, remained closed amid tension in the city.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga gave the Kenya Kwanza Government an ultimatum to address the high cost of living, among others, which they would call demos.
After his calls were not listened to, Odinga later announced planned demos for Monday (today).
The demo is set to affect many businesses as Kenyans remain indoors and towns close.
