According to a new survey conducted by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) ,38 per cent of Kenyans are earning no income.

The poll also revealed that only three per cent of Kenyans earn a monthly income above Kes 50,000.

According to the survey, which gathered responses from 1,530 participants nationwide, 10% of respondents make between Kes 20,000 and Kes 50,000 monthly.

The survey was carried out between June 24 and June 30, 2023.

Only 12% of the respondents said their monthly income was between Kes 5,001 and Kes 10,000.

The findings further highlighted that “The vast majority of Kenyans thus survive on extremely modest incomes,” stated TIFA Research Analyst Tom Wolf during the report announcement.

Regarding savings capacity, the survey revealed that just over one-quarter (28 per cent) of those earning below Kes 5,000 reported being able to save.

Over Kes 50,000 earners reported being able to save, with 50% reporting this.

In terms of employment status, 31% of respondents who are unemployed right now have never held a job, whereas 8% of those who are unemployed right now have held a job in the past.

Only approximately one in ten people who are employed full-time (11%) and most of those employed (29%) are self-employed.
