Meta Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed that Meta’s rival to Twitter, Threads has surpassed more than ten million users within hours of launch.

Threads went live on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries at 2300 GMT on Wednesday.

The app will run with no ads for now, but its release in Europe has been delayed over data privacy concerns.

While a number of prospective rivals have emerged for Elon Musk-owned Twitter, one of the largest social networking sites in the world has not yet been replaced, thanks to Threads.

“10 million sign-ups in seven hours,” Zuckerberg wrote on his official Threads account Thursday.

Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and other well-known figures had accounts already set up, as did The Washington Post and The Economist.

Musk and Zuckerberg are well-known rivals who have proposed a cage fight as a way to settle their score. Zuckerberg also fired a shot in Musk's direction.

Zuckerberg uploaded a Spiderman pointing at Spiderman joke in his first tweet in over ten years, seemingly alluding to the parallels between Threads On Threads, and he wrote: "I think there should be a public discussions app with 1 billion+ people on it. It'll take some time. Twitter has had the chance to do this but hasn't quite succeeded. I think we will.

Twitter has said it has more than 200 million daily users.

Globally, the Threads hashtag on Twitter has garnered over a million tweets, with many users jokingly suggesting people will return to Musk’s platform.
