Transport operations have resumed at the Nairobi Expressway Mlolongo, Syokimau and Standard Gauge Railway Toll Stations amid ongoing renovation on vandalism during last Wednesday’s anti-government demonstrations.
In a statement, Moja Expressway Limited has called upon motorists to be mindful of the ongoing work and drive at the prescribed speed limits.
Last Wednesday, protestors blocked the main Mombasa Road and vandalised the barriers separating the Expressway.
After demonstrators began stoning them, drivers were forced to perform quick U-turns on both sides, damaging many vehicles.
Even as police intervened to restore order, there were no initial reports of casualties.
Police used tear gas to disperse protestors who disobeyed orders not to participate in rallies against tax increases organised by opposition leader Raila Odinga in cities including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kisii, Homa Bay and Nakuru.
Shops were closed, and security was tight in Nairobi, where police used tear gas to disperse stone-throwing protesters in the Mathare slum.
Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki confirmed that six people were killed during the demonstrations.
Before the demonstrations, the Inspector General of Police, Japheth Koome, warned opposition supporters from holding “illegal demonstrations”, saying that organisers had not provided the authorities with any “notifications” about their planned rallies this week.
“In this regard, no such demonstrations/gatherings/protests will be allowed tomorrow… All lawful means will be used to disperse such demonstrations,” Koome said.
