BasiGo has announced expanding to Rwanda to launch eco-friendly public transport systems in the Country.
This is after the Kenyan electric bus start-up partnered with AC Mobility, Rwanda’s provider of automated fare collection systems for public transport, to form BasiGo Rwanda Ltd.
Through the partnership, the firms will pilot electric buses with Kigali Bus Service, Royal Express, and Volcano Express through their pay-as-you-go financing model.
BasiGo Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Jit Bhattacharya said the partnership to help accelerate the transition to electrified public transport.
“Electric buses will bring bus operators freedom from rising fuel prices while also dramatically reducing air pollution and CO2 emissions,” he said.

“Through our Pay-As-You-Drive model, we are excited to bring a complete E-Bus solution to make this technology affordable, accessible and convenient for all bus operators in Rwanda.”
AC Mobility Rwanda CEO Jones Kizihira noted that the partnership will drive Rwanda’s public bus electrification.
“The country has recorded rapid transformation, creating a need for a more robust and cost-effective public transport system. The electric buses will help ease the cost burden of public bus transporters and advance Rwanda’s transition to clean mobility.”
BasiGo, founded in 2021, has been at the forefront of electrifying Kenya's public transit system.
So far, it has made reservations for more than 100 additional electric buses and sold 19 to Nairobi public transportation companies.
More than 580,000 people have been transported by BasiGo electric buses throughout their 460,000 km of travel.
Additionally, it has installed the first DC-fast charging facilities for electric buses in Kenya.
Due to BasiGo's Pay-As-You-Drive leasing model, which is based on mileage, private bus operators can purchase and use electric buses at a reasonable price.
By the end of 2024, BasiGo and AC Mobility hope to have provided 200 electric buses to Rwandan bus companies under this financing arrangement.
