The entry qualification for teacher training will begin with a diploma after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) chose to scrap the Primary Teachers Certificate Training Course, often known as P1.
The teacher body proposes that a teacher score C, followed by at least a D+ in Mathematics and a C minus in English.
"Last week we met the caucus of all deans of universities offering teaching education to deliberate on the requirements for registration. We want to go to Parliament when the education sector is one," said Nancy Macharia.
TSC has also laid out measures to streamline the profession, including the circumstances under which a teacher might be deregistered or punished for various infractions, including sexual misconduct. It is also working to build and institutionalize continual professional development for teachers.

As the reforms take place, teachers stand to benefit from impending improvements. It plans to promote approximately 30,000 teachers in cadres ranging from chief principals to senior teachers.
"We promoted 14,000 teachers in the financial year 2023/2024, in the process of promoting 36 in this financial year, we have been allocated Ksh1 billion for promotions in the financial year 24/45. So the issue of teachers stagnation will be over pretty soon," Macharia added.
Teachers have been assured that their medical services will improve as the teachers' medical scheme improves its delivery methods.
The body has come under fire from stakeholders for some of the proposed revisions to the legislation, with some accusing it of overreaching and granting powers it does not have.
The TSC maintains that constitutional provisions and recommendations from the presidential working group on education reforms guide the initiative to restructure the sector.
