The Ministry of Education has ordered the immediate closure of boarding facilities in 348 primary schools across Kenya for failing to meet safety and compliance standards.
This directive follows an extensive assessment conducted in September and October 2024 to evaluate these schools' adherence to the Safety Standards for Basic Education Institutions.
In a circular dated November 27, 2024, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang disclosed that the affected schools had significantly violated critical safety requirements. Consequently, the ministry has instructed regional, county, and sub-county education directors to enforce the immediate closure of these boarding sections.

Nairobi has the highest number of schools affected, with 44 ordered to close their boarding facilities. This follows heightened scrutiny after a tragic fire incident at Hill Side Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County in September, where 21 boys lost their lives, others were injured, and property worth an undisclosed amount was destroyed.
Other counties affected include Kisii (13 schools), Kiambu (13 schools), Kericho (26 schools), Nandi (15 schools), and Uasin Gishu (19 schools).
The government has directed these schools to operate solely as day schools starting January 2025. Key safety issues identified during the inspection include dormitory conditions, sanitation, fire safety equipment maintenance, and overall learner welfare.
In Nairobi, some notable schools listed in the circular include Visa Oshwal, Thika Road Primary, Jonathan Gloag, Don Bosco Primary School, St. Anna’s Preparatory School, and Happy Land Academy.
With only a month left before schools reopen, parents are now tasked with making alternative arrangements for their children as these institutions transition to day schools.
