Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has been arrested on his way home from a trip overseas.

According to party officials, the opposition leader was arrested when he set foot on Ugandan soil. 

"Our President (Bobi Wine) was picked up by regime operatives as soon as he landed at the airport," the general secretary of Wine's National Unity Platform (NUP), David Lewis Rubongoya, stated on X, formerly Twitter.

The message was accompanied by a photo of two men grabbing his arms on the tarmac at Entebbe International Airport.

Wine's followers had planned to march to his home north of the capital, Kampala, to greet him, but authorities claimed such gatherings were unlawful.

An X user suggested that the opposition header could have been arrested for disobeying COVID restrictions.

Bobi Wine was arrested recently upon his return to Uganda from a trip abroad. He was arrested at Entebbe Airport.
