A British climber aged 60 died while descending from Peak Lenana on Mount Kenya. Her tour guide, Kelvin Muriuki Mwithi, also died as he attempted to save her.

According to The Sun, Shilpa Shah and her guide tragically slipped over the cliff edge between Lenana and the Austrian Hut on the Naro Moru path, one of the most popular hiking routes.

Shah was apparently one of eight climbers in an all-female group who witnessed the horrific fall while battling the infamously snowy route.

Due to adverse weather circumstances, rescue workers had to make three attempts to recover their bodies on Friday afternoon.

The Foreign Office in London expressed condolences to the family and stated that it is in discussions with local authorities about the next steps.

"We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Kenya and are in contact with local authorities," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Mwithi's colleagues are raising donations for the tour guide's widow and child on Facebook.
