A young woman from Mwea, Kirinyaga County, has died after drowning while washing vegetables.
The deceased, Tabitha Wanjiru, a resident of Ngurubani village, was reportedly cleaning some onions in the canal when its rushing floods swept her away.
Mwea-East Sub-County Police Commander James Mutua confirmed the occurrence, saying the deceased's body was discovered by boda boda operators operating along the canal.

Wanjiru's body was initially misidentified as a child swimming in the canal by the boda boda operators, but following closer scrutiny, they discovered her lifeless body.
Investigations have been initiated to determine the exact reason for Wanjiru's drowning.
Her body has since been transferred to a nearby mortuary while authorities await the deceased's kin to retrieve her remains.
In other news, Three police officers were injured when the lorry they were driving was involved in a road accident at Macembe on the Embu-Kitui Road.
Eastern Region Police Commander Lawrence Koilen confirmed the event on Friday morning, saying the lorry was part of a police convoy headed to Nairobi from Mandera.
The lorry experienced a technical problem before overturning in the middle of the road, producing a traffic jam on the busy road, according to the police commander.
