Azimio leader Raila Odinga has praised Nairobians for their backing of the coalition in the general election of 2022.

Odinga claimed that Azimio won the majority of seats in Nairobi County because they were intelligent during a meeting with the clergy on Wednesday.

He went on to say that Polycarp Igathe, the coalition's candidate, was "not good," which is why they lost the governorship.

"We won the Senator, Woman Rep and Presidential seat, how could we lose the governor seat? Not possible," Odinga said.

Prior to Azimio announcing Igathe as its gubernatorial nominee, ODM member for the Westland Tim Wanyonyi was considering the coalition's ticket. But he resigned, a decision Odinga claims was influenced by him.

"I regret it myself, I was told to tell Tim to step down. Tim was good enough, and he accepted. We wanted him to be a running mate but he refused. He said we should allow him to return to Westlands," Odinga said.

Azimio announced Igathe (Jubilee party) as its gubernatorial candidate on April 22, 2022, with Philip Kaloki (Wiper) serving as his running mate.

"As you know there were other members of our coalition who had expressed the desire to become governors; one of them is Timothy Wanyonyi. Wanyonyi has decided to step down from the governorship contest and go back and re-contest his seat as a member of the National Assembly for the Westlands Constituency," Odinga said during the announcement.

Later on, Igathe would finish second in the race, and Johnson Sakaja was proclaimed the new governor of Nairobi.
