A group of Junior Secondary School (JSS) tutor interns in Migori county have threatened to go to the streets if the Ministry of Education does not hire them on a permanent basis.

Following a meeting with the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), they expressed their desire to be hired on a permanent basis after finishing their training on the new curriculum.

Orwa Jasolo, chairman of the Migori branch Teachers' Union, chastised the government for failing to keep a pledge to hire the teachers on permanent contracts.

“The government needs to think twice about this approach, otherwise the teachers will end up not being present for lessons next year. If the interns are not confirmed by January, we will resort to industrial action,” he said.

A group of teachers also claimed they are compelled to teach things outside their expertise.

"There are up to 14 learning areas that one or two teachers are supposed to handle," one said.

The instructors demanded that the government intervene to prevent a strike.
