A family in Gitomboya village in Kirinyaga County has lost farm produce estimated at Kes 200,000 following a fire incident on Thursday.

According to Citizen Digital, the homeowner, Alice Wakuthii heard a distress call at around midnight and dashed to the scene only to find the house where she had stored at least 30 bags of rice on fire.

“I had harvested the rice this season. It has all been consumed by the inferno,” she said.

Efforts by locals to put out the fire were futile, with her belongings reduced to ashes.

“My children’s clothes, furniture and other household items were not spared.”

According to locals, even though they had difficulty putting out the fire, they prevented it from spreading to adjacent buildings.

“We had to join hands to prevent it from spreading further. Rice plantations are just a stone's throw away,” added Josphat Maina.

Officers from Mwea Police Station have launched investigations into the incident.
