Police officers are investigating a case where a 2-year-old was burnt to death in their house in Kirinyaga County.

 According to Gichugu sub-county police chief Johnson Wachira, the incident occurred at Kibai village, Ngariama Ward, when the girl was in the company of her siblings.

Their mother had left them in the house unattended, only to return to discover their wooden house on fire. The brother suffered severe burn injuries.

"I was shocked beyond words. I could not believe what I saw. I raised the alarm and neighbors came in droves," the girls mother, Daina Wanja Muriithi, said.

Locals, led by Rabina Njoki, said it was difficult to put out the fire since it spread so quickly; hence, they could not save the 2-year-old child.

Relatives of the devastated family arrived at the scene to express their condolences to the deceased's mother.

"We received a call that my sister's house has caught fire and her baby has died. We rushed here to be with her," family members, among them John Mugo, Terry Wawira, and Loise Wambura, said.

The four-year-old boy was airlifted to Embu Hospital. His sister's body was taken to the mortuary at Kerugoya Referral Hospital, awaiting a postmortem.
