The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been urged by the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) to overturn a court order requiring individuals with disabilities to renew their tax exemption certificates every three years.
KUSNET Secretary James Torome described the requirement as unfair while speaking at his Narok office. He also brought attention to the process's demeaning aspects and financial burden on individuals with disabilities.
"When this certificate is not renewed, persons with disabilities who are employed, especially by the government, will lose around 16% of their basic salary," Torome told Citizen TV.
"The government is supposed to assist people with disabilities but it is humiliating them. The challenges they face when trying to acquire these certificates is just too much. They have to go the hospitals near locations and then they have to wait to be invited to Westlands where the national council offices for persons with disabilities are located."

The union now requests that Parliamentarians serving on the Labour and Education Committee get involved in the situation.
