After the ramp failed, hundreds of passengers were detained for more than four hours on Tuesday evening at the Mbita ferry terminal in Homa Bay County.

The passengers were traveling from Mbita mainland to Luanda K'Otieno in Siaya County when the Mbita Ferry Services ramp failed with passengers on board.

The ferry also transported at least 13 automobiles, the owners traveling to Siaya County.

The ramp became problematic while passengers were still boarding the ferry at the terminal, according to Mbita Ferry Services manager Bernard Siro, after one of the chains used to control it broke down.

Mr. Siro stated that the incident occurred when they were still at the terminal waiting for the ferry to depart for Luanda Kotieno.

He stated that they had to postpone the travel for several hours to find alternatives because the ferry could not continue with the malfunctioning ramp because it posed a risk to the passengers.

Mr. Siro said they were obliged to carry passengers on two different vessels while they repaired the damaged ramp.

However, no one was hurt or killed as a result of the incident.
