Embakasi gas plant owner Derrick Kimathi will remain in custody for 21 days to facilitate ongoing investigations into the explosion that occurred last week, leaving six people dead and 300 others injured.
Kimathi surrendered to police days after the explosion while the NEMA officials were arrested following a directive by President William Ruto.
This is after a magistrate’s court in Milimani on Wednesday allowed police to detain Kimathi and two NEMA officials for three weeks, while the fourth suspect will be detained for two weeks because he is unwell.
Kimathi will be held in custody alongside Joseph Makau and Marrian Kioko; both NEMA officials accused of unlawfully issuing him a license.
Due to health concerns, David Ng'are, another NEMA official, has been arrested for a maximum of 14 days; his detention facility is located closer to Kenyatta National Hospital.

The investigation's chief inspector, Chief Inspector Isaac Tenai, stressed the case's intricacy and the necessity of getting the victim's family to provide statements.
There may be more bodies and casualties to be found as part of the ongoing, complex inquiry into the event. The area is still dangerous to analyze because of the significant car and equipment damage.
