The prosecution has requested that the court deny cash bail to John Matara, the primary suspect in the murder of socialite Starlet Wahu,
because he is likely to obstruct prosecution witnesses.
The prosecution argued that Matara posed a flight risk and that, before his arrest, his lease on his Kasarani apartment had been terminated, leaving him without a known fixed place of residence.
The prosecution also pointed out that complaints against Matara have been filed with multiple police stations by various women, alleging that he lured them to short-term apartments where he committed crimes before escaping.

According to an affidavit from the investigating officer, Sergeant Alex Chokera, John Matara first connected with socialite Starlet Wahu on the internet dating service "Bed Escorts" on January 1, 2024. He then killed her, according to the affidavit, at a short-term rental apartment in South B, Nairobi, where they first met in person.
According to the officer's testimony, the apartment's owner expressed concerns for her safety because she had direct contact with Matara and provided phone numbers.
The issue is scheduled to be discussed on March 18, 2024. Matara entered a not-guilty plea after being accused of killing Wahu. He requested monetary bail from the court, promising to follow all rules set forth by the authorities if allowed to go free.
