According to the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), during protests over the delayed posting of medical interns, its secretary general, Dr. Davji Atellah, was shot.
In an afternoon statement, KMPDU criticized the police for claiming that Dr. Atellah was leading a peaceful procession when he was shot and hurt.
"We strongly denounce the police shooting of our SG @Davji this afternoon while he was leading the medical interns in a nonviolent march. Kenyan doctors have suffered long enough! The statement on X said, "This is the straw that breaks the camel's back."
After being taken to the Nairobi Hospital, Dr. Atellah is currently receiving treatment for the wounds he received in the incident.

In response to the delayed posting of medical interns and the unpaid tuition for postgraduate students, the head of KMPDU announced in a letter to the Nairobi Regional Police Commander on Thursday that there would be a nonviolent protest in Nairobi.
The physicians marched to the Ministry of Health offices from the Kenya Medical Association Center in the Upper Hill neighborhood. They were then directed to the Treasury headquarters in the city's heart.
A nationwide strike was threatened by Dr. Atellah last week if more than 1,000 medical interns were not hired. He also criticized the Ministry of Health for not accepting the medics and depriving Kenyans of access to healthcare.
