Eugene Wamalwa, who previously served as Defence Cabinet Secretary in the former regime, suggested that the new leadership for Azimio La Umoja would be selected from the current coalition leaders. DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa has unveiled intentions to revamp the top leadership within Azimio La Umoja.
During a Citizen TV interview on Tuesday, April 16, Wamalwa highlighted that Azimio leaders are currently in discussions regarding who will assume leadership if Raila Odinga secures the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position.
Wamalwa, a former Defence Cabinet Secretary, suggested that the new leader would be selected from the existing pool of coalition leaders.
The experienced political leader further elaborated on the expertise of each Azimio Principal, emphasizing that any of them possesses the necessary knowledge to advance the coalition's agenda.
"If Raila leaves, Azimio la Umoja will remain united. At the moment we are campaigning for Raila but at the same time we are planning on how to recognise our team," he stated.
"Very soon, Kenyans are going to know who Raila will hand over the captain's armband," he insisted.
Among those eyeing the seat include Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka who has been vocal about succeeding Raila and Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua who is yet to declare her stance publicly.
Addressing the same issue in the past, Raila noted that he will after ensuring Azimio's house is in order. He further added that he would not completely leave Kenyan politics.
“Let me respond to some issues and fears which have arisen. I am not going anywhere. I am around,” he said.
Simultaneously, Wamalwa dismissed reports suggesting that Raila's departure would weaken Azimio, attributing such claims to Kenya Kwanza's agenda to undermine them. Nonetheless, he maintained that the opposition was fully equipped to confront Kenya Kwanza.
