According to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the government of Kenya has confirmed 71 deaths due to Monday's flash floods in the Mai Mahiu area.
In a phone interview with Inooro FM, the DP stated that even as day two of the search and rescue effort approaches, more people have been reported missing following the tragedy.
According to him, when feasible, the government will help other agencies with the search by deploying Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers.
“We have 46 people in the mortuary but we have more bodies being taken there so they will be about 71. There are many others who are still missing and a search is ongoing. We pray that we find them alive. If they are dead then we will say God is never questioned,” Gachagua said.

The news comes as President William Ruto calls a special cabinet meeting at the State House to discuss the nation's flooding crisis, which has killed over 160 people so far.
On Monday, a water body in Kijabe burst its banks and began to fly towards homes in Mai Mahiu, causing flash floods.
The Mai Mahiu tragedy has claimed the most significant number of lives in Kenya despite other flood-related deaths being reported.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the heavy rains through May will cause more flooding and mudslides.
