In Mai Mahiu, Naivasha Nakuru County, the latest consequences of the persistently heavy rains are death and destruction.

After heavy rains unlocked blocked waterways that had accumulated tons of water, 71 people were killed and property of unknown value was destroyed. The residents of four villages in the area count the losses in terms of life and property.

The problem arose on Monday morning when the dam, which was more than 20 kilometers distant, broke its bank and began to leak water into nearby villages.

During the process, tens of people lost their lives, scores went missing, and more than twenty people on an Easy Coach bus that was submerged in floodwaters were missing.

OCPD Stephen Kirui of Naivasha stated over the phone that 17 of the 71 bodies found in various places were underage.

As the search operation carried on, he warned that the number might increase daily and that it was unknown what had become of the passengers in the tragic Easy Coach bus.

The head of police continued by saying that during the incident, floods carried away multiple cars carrying people, leaving behind bodies and wrecks that have not yet been found.

William Rokai, one of the victims, claims that they were awakened in a matter of minutes by a loud, vibrating noise, followed by his house flooding.

Before the water swept everything in its path, Rokai and his two brothers could save their two kids from the roof and flee to higher ground.

He claimed that they were asleep when the incident happened and that he was only able to save his family, with the rest of the house being washed downstream.
