A 74-year-old man has been rescued from Ndeini island in Wamunyu, Machakos County after being stuck there for seven days.
Nyolo Ngeti had gone to check on his livestock on the island when the river's water levels surged, preventing him from crossing back to the mainland.
Nyolo revealed that he had not eaten for seven days and was forced to drink the flooding water to survive.
“I have suffered on the island and I thank Governor Wavinya Ndeti for organizing a boat to rescue me. I will henceforth warn everyone against getting near flooded places,” he narrated.
Ngati was reunited with his family.
Ten people have been saved from River Athi, including seven individuals evacuated to safety last Friday.
Another man was saved in Oldonyo Sabuk while police flew a five-year-old youngster from the Ndiuni district of Katangi after he spent five days on an island.
Rita Ndunge, a Machakos County Executive Committee Member for Roads and Transport who monitored Ngeti's rescue effort, recommended citizens avoid flooding-prone regions to avoid similar accidents.
