Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has warned about the government's proposal to cut the budget for flood mitigation by more than Ksh.3 billion.

Gathungu testified before the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee on Monday and said a review of the budget estimates shows insufficient funding for recovery programs.

These include flood mitigation and food security, when the country needs the funds to recover from the destruction caused by floods, which are estimated to cost more than Ksh.80 billion.

“The review of the 2024/2025 budget estimates indicates inadequate allocation for recovery programmes like flood mitigation and food security, signalling potential issues with other competing priorities and under estimation of envisaged risks,” said Gathungu.

“The aggregated budget has been reduced by about 955 billion from the previous years estimated expenditure of 4.4 billion in sampled programmes which have indicated in the table on flood mitigation and food security initiatives.”

The Auditor General has also expressed concern about the proposal to reduce her budget by more than Ksh.270 million, stating that the move will have an impact on operations, including audit report preparation.
