Police are investigating a fire incident that killed two children aged four months and four years at Kagumo Trading Centre in Kirinyaga Central Constituency on Monday night.

According to the police, the mother of the two children had gone to the market to buy supper when the incident happened.

They were burnt beyond recognition.

Kagumo residents and firefighters from the County Government of Kirinyaga had difficulty putting out the fire.

Area MCA David Kinyua Wangui, who arrived at the scene immediately, said over 20 rented wooden houses were reduced to ashes.

"We are appealing for help as they have slept in the cold," Kinyua said.

According to Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Alasow, the fire started in one of the affected houses before spreading quickly to other wooden houses.

"The cause of the fire has not yet been established. We have launched investigations.”

The two bodies, burnt beyond recognition, were taken to Kerugoya Mortuary.
