Gikomba market traders have moved to Court seeking orders to stop the ongoing demolitions of their premises, which are conducted at night and on weekends.

Through their Lawyer, Danstan Omari, the traders said they were not given notices as required by the law.

Omari has asked the court to issue an injunction halting the demolitions and allowing them to return to their business.

The over 222 traders argue that they have been on the premises since 1932 and have subsequently been paying taxes to the Nairobi County government.

For many years, they have cited Gikomba as the only place they know where they can carry out business that supports their children.

Additionally, their lawyer argues that it is a business center covering East Africa and Africa in general.

The court has since urged the Nairobi County government to respond to the application. The parties have submitted their submissions to the application and await a decision on 10 June 2024.

The traders Streamed to Milimani Law Court in large numbers seeking the intervention of the court and appealed to the head of state to come to their rescue.
