It will be temporary confinement for Vybz Kartel and his co-defendants.

When his associate Clive "Lizard" Williams vanished more than ten years ago, and his body was never found, Vybz Kartel was detained. When the adored dancehall artist challenged his life sentence in March, things started improving for him. Despite having the option to be retried, his appeal successfully reversed the conviction.

He did, however, appear in court today in Kingston with his co-defendants, Shawn "Shawn Storm" Campbell and Andre St John, where Supreme Court Justice Andrea Thomas denied them bail. This implies that they will remain in custody until a formal acquittal occurs or a decision is made to proceed with a new trial. Justice Thomas clarified, "Given that their appeal has not yet been decided, they should stay in custody until their appeal is resolved." "That is, until an acquittal verdict is rendered or a retrial is decided upon."

Following the men's attorney, Isat Buchanan's argument that "a conviction must exist for there to be authority to detain" them, the decision was made public. The state responded that the Privy Council's reversal of their convictions did not result in their acquittal. Instead, it is reported that they have returned to their pre-trial status with "live" murder charges.

Vybz's attorneys used alleged juror misconduct from his 2014 trial as justification for overturning his conviction. They claim that one juror tried to influence the verdict by offering the other jurors $500,000. "The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council has concluded that the appeals should be allowed and the appellants' convictions should be quashed on the ground of juror misconduct, and that the case should be remitted to the Court of Appeal of Jamaica to decide whether to order a retrial of the appellants for the murder of the deceased," the Privy Council stated in a statement at the time.
