The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) postponed interviews for Judges of the Court of Appeal scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, to Friday, June 21, 2024.

According to JSC Secretary Winfridah Mokaya, the Judiciary will take time to honor the life and service of Magistrate Monica Kivuti, who died after she was shot inside the Makadara Law Courts on Thursday last week.

In a statement, the JSC hailed Kivuti as a committed magistrate who upheld the rule of law and professionalism in dispensing her duties.

"Hon. Kivuti was a valued member of the Judiciary team, known for her unwavering commitment in upholding the rule of law and profound professionalism and dedication in ensuring justice for all.”

"The JSC extends the deepest condolences to Hon Kivuti's family, friends and all those who had the privilege of working with her,” read the statement.

Chief Justice Martha Koome on Saturday confirmed that Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti died at Nairobi Hospital, where she was transferred for special care from Metropolitan Hospital.

According to the CJ, she succumbed to injuries sustained from a shooting incident involving a Senior Police officer on Thursday.

"I wish to confirm to the Nation that Hon. Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate, Makadara Law Courts, has lost the fight against the extensive injuries sustained during an open gun attack in Court,” the CJ said.

The Judiciary family stands in solidarity during this deeply traumatic time and calls for sensitivity and compassion as we share in grief. May Hon. Kivuti’s soul rest in eternal peace.”

The Commission had shortlisted 41 candidates for the Court of Appeal judge position from a list of 82 who had expressed interest.

They are now set to reduce the list to 11 judges who will fill the vacancies in the Court of Appeal.

Among the candidates included former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair Ahmed Issack Hassan, Justices Nduma Nderi, Antony Mrima, Grace Nzioka, Elijah Ogoti, Alfred Mabeya and Katwa Kigen (President William Ruto's lawyer at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Thereafter, the names will be forwarded to President Ruto for appointment, which is anticipated to reduce the backlog of cases in the courtrooms.
