Emotions ran high as the mother of Evans Kiratu, who died during the peaceful anti-finance bill protests, broke down in tears while viewing his body for the last time as it left the mortuary for burial.

The video shared on X and seen by Waza News shows Kiratu's mother overwhelmed with emotions as she tries to see her son one final time. she collapsed a few moments later and had to be carried out o the mortuary by friend and family who had come tp pay their last respects.

The 21-year-old died after reportedly being struck by a tear gas canister fired by police.

The event occurred at a rally in Nairobi on Thursday, June 20, as protestors expressed their opposition to the contentious Finance Bill 2024, which is set to be voted on by MPs on Tuesday after passing its second reading by a vote of 204-115.

Kiratu's mother, Ann Wanjiru, verified her son's death, saying she was notified by a Good Samaritan late on the night of June 22, 2024, that her son had been hurt, but she rushed to find out that he had already died.

“He died after the canister exploded. I have identified my son’s body. I want the government to explain to me if we elected them to kill our children.

I had hopes and dreams for him,” said Ms Wanjiru.
