The individual who was shot and killed at former President Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday has been identified as 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro shared on Sunday that Comperatore died heroically while shielding his family from gunfire.

According to a Facebook post by Comperatore's family, his sister expressed their grief, stating, "The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most." Comperatore had previously served as the chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Governor Shapiro, after speaking with Comperatore's family, conveyed parts of their conversation to the press. "Corey died a hero. Corey dove on his family to protect them last night at this rally," Shapiro said. "Corey was the very best of us." Comperatore is survived by his wife and two daughters. "Corey was a girl dad," Shapiro noted.

Shapiro continued, "Corey was a firefighter. Corey went to church every Sunday. Corey loved his community and, most especially, Corey loved his family." He also described Comperatore as an avid supporter of the former president.

The incident occurred just as Trump began his speech at the Pennsylvania rally, when shots rang out, and Trump was grazed by a bullet on his right ear. The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in what is being called an assassination attempt on Trump.
