A ceasefire in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will commence on August 4, following successful negotiations between DRC and Rwanda, according to a statement from the Angolan presidency, which has been mediating the discussions.
The statement did not detail the parties involved in the ceasefire agreement or its duration.
Earlier in July, a two-week humanitarian truce was observed amidst intense clashes between Congolese government forces and M23 rebels. The DRC accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23, an allegation Rwanda denies.
The ongoing conflict in North Kivu province has displaced over 1.7 million people, contributing to a record total of 7.2 million displaced individuals in the DRC, as per United Nations estimates.
A spokesperson for the Congolese foreign ministry confirmed the ceasefire to Reuters, stating that it would be of indefinite duration.
