Nearly 20 army officers sustained serious injuries when the truck they were traveling in lost control near Gatithi, close to Kibongoti trading center, along the Sagana-Karatina road in Kirinyaga County.
Kirinyaga West sub-county police commander, Moses Koskei, stated that the truck was en route from Karatina to Nairobi when the accident occurred. "Upon being informed of the accident, I immediately dispatched traffic police officers from Sagana police station to the scene. The injured soldiers have been taken to Naji Private Hospital, Kerugoya Hospital, and Jamii Karatina Hospital," he said.
An eyewitness, David Kariuki, mentioned that he was on his way to Kibingoti trading center to purchase medicine when he saw the army truck lose control after hitting a bump. Another witness, Justin Ng'ang'a, reported that 12 soldiers were taken to Naji Private Hospital in Kibingoti, while 13 others were transported to Karatina Hospital with serious injuries. "I own a petrol station nearby and rushed to the scene immediately after the accident to assist 12 soldiers, who are now at Naji Private Hospital," Ng'ang'a added.
Local residents speculate that the truck was carrying 33 officers, although this has not been confirmed. Commander Koskei mentioned that police officers are conducting further investigations into the incident.
