Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna has openly criticized the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) for proposing toll fees on Kenya's major roads.
Using his X platform, Sifuna questioned KeNHA's justification for imposing charges on roads previously built with taxpayer funds.
Sifuna expressed his intent to summon KeNHA officials to the Senate for further explanation regarding these new policies.
He tweeted, "I don’t know how @KeNHA Kenya justifies the proposal to start tolling roads built by taxpayer money years ago."
The senator also recommended that KeNHA focus on constructing new toll roads rather than charging users for existing ones. He emphasized, "Build new toll roads, mchukue pesa, but you can’t start charging us for using Thika road bwana! Let’s finish with Kawira, then I’ll summon you to the Senate for clarification."
KeNHA recently announced that if the proposed Road Tolling Policy, currently under discussion, is approved, Kenyans could pay toll fees. The roads under consideration include the Thika Superhighway, Nairobi Southern Bypass, Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway, Kenol-Sagana-Marua Road, Mombasa Southern Bypass, and the newly opened Dongo Kundu Bypass.
