The Ministry of Interior is under scrutiny regarding the chemical composition of the tear gas and colored liquid used by police water cannons during the recent anti-government protests.

In a letter dated July 30, lawyers from Mugeria, Lempaa, and Kariuki Advocates addressed Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, seeking detailed information on the chemical formula of the tear gas and the origin of the substances used.

The letter specifically asks, "What is the chemical formula of the tear gas and the water cannon liquid used by the police to disperse protesters? From which countries is the tear gas imported?"

The lawyers also requested clarification on whether the tear gas has any side effects on reproductive health and if it has been approved and certified as safe by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). Additionally, they inquired about the cost incurred for tear gas during the 2023/24 financial year.

"Please note that as consumers of these chemicals, time is of the essence in providing the information sought in this letter. We request that you provide the information as soon as possible," the letter continues.

The police faced criticism for excessive use of force against unarmed protesters during the recent demonstrations, which initially began in opposition to the controversial Finance Bill 2024 and later expanded to broader anti-government protests.
