Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim has addressed concerns about fraudulent schemes in Eldoret after a recent expozee by citizen tv.
The report revealed that over 300 individuals were deceived into paying substantial amounts for non-existent jobs in Canada.
Governor Chelilim criticized the actions of these fraudulent entities for damaging Eldoret's reputation as a vibrant and progressive city.
To tackle these deceptive practices, Chelilim announced a strict crackdown. His administration, working in partnership with local and national authorities, will revoke business licenses of entities in breach of regulations. The aim is to rebuild public trust and promptly address such fraudulent activities.
Chelilim has also called on the National Employment Authority and the Ministry of Labour to enhance their vetting procedures for international job opportunities, ensuring greater accountability to protect Eldoret's residents.
"Eldoret deserves recognition for its successes and potential, not for the actions of those who exploit our community," Chelilim remarked. He expressed deep sympathy for the students and families affected by these scams and urged the public to be vigilant and thoroughly verify any suspicious opportunities.
Eldoret has recently faced scrutiny due to various financial scams, including fake recruitment schemes and currency fraud. The latest incident involved significant financial losses for parents and students who were misled about job placements in Canada that did not exist.
