Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has expressed skepticism regarding the ongoing meetings held by Azimio leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K).
During an interview on Daybreak, Senator Onyonka criticized these meetings as futile, citing that ODM, the party led by Raila Odinga, has effectively joined the government.
Onyonka urged Kalonzo and Wamalwa to pursue their political paths, highlighting that Raila’s decision to work with President William Ruto in forming a broad-based government has significantly altered the political landscape.
"My honest opinion is that these meetings are a waste of time. The horse has bolted—ODM is now part of the government. I don't see the point in Kalonzo and Wamalwa continuing these gatherings," Onyonka stated.
He also expressed his frustration, questioning the relevance of these political alliances and urging leaders to reconsider their strategies. Onyonka emphasized that despite ODM’s current position, he remains committed to holding the government accountable.
"I will continue to provide oversight, regardless of political alignments. If John Mbadi, for example, makes mistakes, I will criticize him. If he does well, I will commend him," Onyonka affirmed.
His comments come amid growing speculation about divisions within Azimio regarding forming a broad-based government. Some coalition leaders have suggested that ODM should officially join the government, raising doubts about Raila’s dedication to opposition leadership.
However, ODM officials, including chairperson Gladys Wanga, have defended Raila, rejecting any attempts to pressure him into endorsing other leaders within Azimio. "We will not allow anyone to use Raila Odinga as a scapegoat for failed leadership within individual parties," Wanga asserted.
