The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that it will settle all newly raised teacher salaries by August 30.

According to TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia, the payment will be backdated to July after the government released Kes 13 billion for phase two of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The development came even as Teachers who are members of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) began picketing at their various offices nationwide.

According to KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori, the National Governing Council approved the industrial action, after the government failed to address members’ grievances by the expiry of the Strike Notice.

However, the Kenya National Union of Teachers has called off the planned strikes ahead of schools’ re-opening.

In a statement, KNUT Secretary General Collin Henry Oyuu stated that the suspension follows a day-long meeting of the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC).

"The NEC has, therefore, today August 25, 2024, agreed to withdraw the strike action notice which was elapsing midnight August 25, 2024 since we have commenced addressing the remaining matters administratively. In light of the latest developments, we direct our teachers to resume duty effective Monday, August 26, 2024," Oyuu said.

KNUT stated that it decided after considering all options, the developments of the matters at hand, and the level of commitment by both the government, TSC, and the teachers' position in driving the education agenda.

KNUT said that despite being unconvinced by some of the steps taken by the government and TSC to address pressing concerns, it believes there is goodwill to meet the union's demands.
