President William Ruto has mandated that National Youth Service (NYS) recruits undergo mandatory basic firearms training to enhance their readiness to defend the nation when necessary.

On Monday at the 88th National Youth Service Recruits Pass-Out Parade in Gilgil, Ruto emphasized his administration's commitment to integrating more servicemen and women into the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and securing job opportunities for NYS graduates.

"The NYS is crucial to our efforts in improving public service delivery and bolstering national security," Ruto stated.

He highlighted that out of the 790 officers recently recruited by the Kenya Wildlife Service, 447 were former NYS recruits, reflecting a 56% success rate in aligning with his directive for security agencies to prioritize NYS graduates due to their discipline, skills, and paramilitary training.

Ruto also instructed the Ministries of Interior and Defence to ensure that the NYS paramilitary training program includes an introductory firearms course, equipping recruits to defend the country when needed.
