The High Court has mandated Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli to appear in person on Thursday to address the disappearance of two brothers, Jamil Longton and Aslam Longton, and an activist, Bob Njagi.
The trio was allegedly abducted two weeks ago in Kitengela, following protests, by individuals believed to be security officers.
Tensions ran high at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, ahead of the case, where Masengeli was summoned to explain the men's whereabouts.
Activist Julius Kamau was forcibly removed from the premises after demanding justice for those who have been killed or abducted during the protests. Other activists present wore t-shirts and displayed posters featuring the missing men.
Despite the summons, Masengeli did not appear in court and was represented by his legal officer, who claimed the IG was on official duty.
This argument was quickly dismissed by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, who argued that Masengeli was in contempt of court and called for his arrest.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi had previously directed top officials, including the IG, to disclose the men's whereabouts. The court has now ordered Masengeli to appear in person at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
