New details have emerged concerning the mysterious death of Evans Kiplagat Chirchir, a procurement intern at the National Treasury, whose body was discovered at Machakos Level 5 Hospital morgue on Wednesday.
An autopsy revealed Chirchir suffered fatal head and back injuries, along with broken legs, allegedly sustained in a hit-and-run accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Maanzoni.
Police reports state that on the evening of August 30, Chirchir received a phone call from his neighbor, Bosco Omondi; around 9 p.m., he left their shared residence in Athi River without his phone.
Chirchir's brother contacted Omondi the following morning when he failed to return that night. Omondi told him they had parted ways after having dinner at Kyumbi Junction.
Investigations indicate Chirchir was struck by a black Toyota Harrier, which was identified by debris and broken side mirror fragments found at the accident scene. His body was later transferred to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary, initially booked as unidentified.
The driver involved was arrested but released on a Ksh.50,000 bond. The NTSA inspected and released his vehicle. The driver is expected to appear in court in two weeks, facing charges of dangerous driving, causing death, and failing to report the accident.
Dr. Daniel Katua, the medical superintendent of Machakos Level 5 Hospital, confirmed that Chirchir’s body was brought to the facility on August 31 at 9:20 p.m. and later identified by officers from Kyumbi Police Station.
Chirchir had reportedly expressed concerns for his safety before his death, linked to a Ksh.286 million tender, raising questions about whether foul play may have been involved.
