Fire on Wednesday night burnt down property of unknown value at Matiku Secondary School in Nzaui, Makueni County.
Confirming the incident, Nzaui Headquarters Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Erick Munene Nyaga said that the 157-capacity dormitory caught fire shortly after the students ate supper and were watching the news in a hall in the school compound at around 7 pm.
Following the incident, all students have been sent home indefinitely; however, form four students will return to school on 12/09/2024.
“Nothing was salvaged from the dormitory due to the raging fire that reduced students’s belongings to ashes,” he said.
For his part, the school’s Principal, Patrick Nyolo, said the students had not raised any grievances to the school's management since they returned after the strike called by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
