Most parts of Kenya are expected to remain dry over the next week, according to the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department. In its report released on Tuesday, the department noted that while most regions will experience sunny and dry conditions, a few areas will receive light to moderate rainfall.

"Generally, most parts of Kenya will remain sunny and dry. However, light to moderate rains are expected in some areas of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coast," the report stated.

Additionally, some areas will experience cooler night temperatures, especially in parts of the Central Highlands, Central and Southern Rift Valley, and the South-eastern Lowlands, where temperatures could drop below 10°C. Daytime temperatures, on the other hand, are forecast to rise, with some regions such as the South Rift Valley, Coast, Western, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya expected to see temperatures exceeding 30°C.

Recently, the Meteorological Department had advised the public to prepare for a chilly and rainy September. Director David Gikungu explained that the cold season was expected to extend well into the month, unlike in previous years when September was typically ideal for outdoor activities.

Gikungu attributed the unusual weather patterns to heavy rains in Ethiopia and the broader impacts of climate change. He explained that the sun’s movement southward causes increased cloud cover over the Equator, which leads to rainfall in western Kenya. "With the clouds, we can’t have intense heat from the sun," Gikungu said. He also highlighted that the shifting climatic patterns have contributed to the prolonged chilly conditions.
