Kenya Airways has warned of delays and cancellations of flights to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) due to the ongoing aviation workers' strike against the deal between the government and an Indian Conglomerate, Adani Group.

On Wednesday morning, the Kenya Airport Workers Union (KAWU) led the demonstrations at the airport, which has since paralyzed operations.

In a statement, Kenya Airways said they will continue to observe the situation and give an update on the affected flights.

“Kenya airways would like to alert you that due to the action by some JKIA Staff this has resulted in some delays and possible cancellations of some of our flights for both departing and arriving passengers.”

This came shortly after Jambojet suspended all its flights landing or taking off from JKIA pending further directives.

“Jambojet wishes to notify guests of flight disruptions due to the ongoing strike by airport workers. All our flights, scheduled to land and takeoff from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) are hereby on hold until further notice,” the airline said in a statement.

Long queues of stranded travelers characterized the airport after boarding and takeoff were delayed, sparking an outrage.

Aviation workers have over the past few weeks voiced opposition to the proposed lease of JKIA to Adani Group, an Indian airport operator.

However, the government says that the company is only set to invest in a second runway and refurbishment of the existing facilities at JKIA.
