Ugenya MP David Ochieng' has threatened to initiate a censure motion in the National Assembly against acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli if he fails to resign by the end of Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
Ochieng' described Masengeli as unfit for his role, accusing him of being "rogue" and untrustworthy in leading Kenya’s police force.
Speaking on Citizen TV's Daybreak Show, Ochieng warned that if Masengeli refuses to step down, he will personally lead efforts to force his removal from office through parliament. "He must leave office. That should not even be up for debate," Ochieng emphasized.

The MP expressed concern over Masengeli's disregard for the rule of law, citing his repeated failure to appear in court despite seven summonses. Ochieng' argued that such defiance undermines legal authority and sets a dangerous precedent for law enforcement in Kenya.
"We are witnessing a breakdown of legal order. If we tolerate this, how can we expect ordinary citizens to respect the law?" Ochieng' asked.
He also urged the National Police Security Council (NPSC) and the Ministry of Interior to take swift action to prevent further erosion of public trust in the country's security agencies.
Masengeli’s contempt of court relates to his failure to provide information on the whereabouts of three individuals—Bob Njagi, Jamil Longton, and Aslam Longton—who allegedly went missing after being abducted by police during anti-government protests.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi sentenced Masengeli to six months in prison for contempt. He could avoid jail if he appeared in court within seven days.
Ochieng' has called for immediate action, stating, "This cannot be allowed to stand even for a single day."
