Peter Agoro, the chairman of the Consortium of Civil Societies in Kenya, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to extort Ksh. Three million from a state corporation CEO.
Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers arrested Agoro at a hotel in Nairobi, where Agoro was reportedly set to collect the money.
According to EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, Agoro allegedly demanded the bribe as a "facilitation fee" to refrain from pursuing and publicizing accusations of procurement misconduct involving the CEO.
After negotiations, Agoro agreed to lower the amount to Ksh. 2 million, with Ksh. 1.5 million to be paid immediately and the remaining Ksh. 500,000 later.
The CEO, whose identity remains undisclosed, reported the matter to EACC, prompting the commission to conduct a sting operation. Agoro was arrested after receiving the first installment of Ksh. 1.5 million, which consisted of USD 10,800 and Ksh. 100,000 in cash.
Following his arrest, Agoro was taken into custody at the EACC Integrity Centre police station.
