The National Assembly has officially approved the appointment of Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector General of Police. This follows his appearance before the Joint Parliamentary Committee on vetting, which included members from the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security, as well as the Senate Standing Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations.

After reviewing his nomination, the MPs endorsed Kanja for the role, paving the way for his swearing-in by President William Ruto. The approval comes just weeks after the Senate passed a resolution on August 20, 2024, confirming Kanja as the head of the National Police Service (NPS).

Kanja, who previously served as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), will take over from Japhet Koome, who resigned in July. Following Koome's departure, President Ruto nominated Kanja to assume the position of Inspector General.

With a career spanning nearly 40 years, Kanja began his law enforcement journey in 1985 and has steadily risen through the ranks. In his previous role as Deputy Inspector General, he also served as Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) for five years. Kanja has held various senior positions, including GSU Deputy Commandant, Kilifi County Police Commander, Deputy Commandant of the Kenya Airports Police Unit, Chief Armourer at Police Headquarters, and Deputy Chief Armourer.
