Nominated Senator Raphael Chimera is advocating for the government to legalize the sale of traditional local brews, emphasizing their health benefits. The senator is proposing changes to the Alcoholic Drinks Control Law, aiming for stricter regulations on imported alcohol while encouraging the consumption of local beverages, similar to practices in neighboring countries.
“What we're suggesting is that many Kenyans are accessing alcohol, particularly in smaller quantities. If we limit it to 750 ml, people would drink more for enjoyment rather than just to get intoxicated,” Chimera explained during an interview with Citizen TV.
The bill, currently in the Senate, seeks to permit the sale of local brews like muratina, busaa, and mnazi without the need for licenses. Chimera added, "This move will help ensure that the alcohol people consume is safe and meets quality standards, unlike the numerous counterfeits in the market. It's also a significant step in the fight against illicit alcohol."
