Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo recently shared insights into how President William Ruto selected Rigathi Gachagua as his deputy, revealing it was a decision against the majority’s preference.
During an interview with Hot 96, Kabogo disclosed that Ruto chose Gachagua despite most leaders backing Kithure Kindiki, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, as his running mate.
Kabogo explained that 26 people voted on the matter, with 21 supporting Kindiki and only three voting for Gachagua.
Anne Waiguru and Justin Muturi also received a vote each. Despite this overwhelming support for Kindiki, Ruto took an additional 18 hours before insisting on Gachagua as his final choice.
Ruto defended his decision to Kabogo by comparing it to a governor selecting their deputy, saying, “I want to be president, why can’t I pick my deputy?” Kabogo questioned why Ruto sought input from others if he had already decided. Eventually, Ruto chose Gachagua, sticking to his personal preference.
Kabogo also commented on Gachagua’s current political challenges, including an impeachment push. He suggested that Ruto owes Kenyans an explanation regarding why he picked Gachagua and why their relationship has deteriorated to the point of seeking his removal.
He added that Gachagua’s downfall could be attributed to his tribal politics, particularly his promotion of the "Watu wa Mlima" narrative.
Regarding DP Rigathi Gachagua's recent public apology, Kabogo stated that it seemed insincere as the deputy president attempted to justify his mistakes.
Gachagua is currently facing accusations of misconduct and amassing wealth through questionable means. Ruto has yet to comment on the impeachment proceedings.
